Meet the Team
David Jenkins - Managing Director
David is the firm’s managing director and founded MDJ Services in 1999. After spending 20 years working in larger firms around East Sussex David decided it was time to branch out and go it alone, believing he could give clients something they were missing out on.
He is the main point of contact for a large number of the firm’s clients and is responsible for overseeing the accounting and business services of MDJ’s largest clients. He is the reason behind the rapid growth of the company as a result of his friendly and quality advice.
Personally David is very passionate about his role as Chairman of Eastbourne Town Football Club and is also a keen Welsh rugby supporter.
Steven Kemp - Director
Steven joined the firm in 2013, trained and qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant with the ACCA before being appointed as a Director in 2017.
Steve looks after a growing portfolio of the firm’s clients and often heads up the initial meetings with potential clients. He deals with the majority of accounting and tax issues and relishes providing business advisory services to the larger clients he oversees.
He also supervises the internal staff training at MDJ along with management of all internal processes and procedures.
In his spare time Steve is committed to following his beloved Tottenham Hotspur and playing golf, although both of these have taken a back seat to spending time with his young sons.
Tom Jenkins - Director
Tom is an AAT qualified accountant and has been with the firm from day one.
Along with the accounting, tax and VAT work he provides for his clients, Tom is also Office Manager at MDJ and oversees the payroll and pension department. Tom has a lot of contact with the majority of MDJ’s clients and is always on hand to assist with anything that arises.
Outside of MDJ, Tom enjoys loud music, quiet reading and is a firm supporter of Chelsea Football Club.
Paul Bartlett - Senior Manager
Paul joined MDJ in 2003 having spent the previous 20 years working for other accountancy firms in the local area.
As a senior manager within the firm he has a wide experience dealing with owner managed businesses and is able to provide help and advice on a variety of different areas of tax and business support.
Paul lives in Ringmer with his wife and two children. He likes swimming and walking and takes an interest in most sports.
Tony Ripley - Senior Manager
Tony is a Chartered Accountant and joined MDJ in 2020 having worked at other Sussex based accountancy firms for the previous 7 years.
Tony provides accounting and taxation services for Limited Companies and Owner Managed Businesses, as well as assisting with training the firms trainee accountants and improving internal processes. Tony has a very good technical knowledge of cloud bookkeeping software, including Xero and QuickBooks, and assists clients with any queries or set ups with these.
Outside of work, Tony spends most of his time with his two children but when he finds the time he also enjoys some video editing and playing piano, and is a keen film enthusiast.
Monica Podariu - Semi-Senior Accountant
Monica joined the firm in 2018 after working in other financial industries. She is currently studying for her ACCA exams and is making good progress.
Monica provides accounting, VAT and bookkeeping services, as well as assisting the Directors and Senior Managers with their portfolio of work.
Monica is a big fan of watching and practicing tennis as well as going to the gym to keep fit.
Chloe Roberts - Assistant Accountant
Chloe joined MDJ in 2018 after working in the accounts department for a local construction firm. She is AAT qualified and currently studying towards her ACCA qualification.
Chloe provides accounting, VAT and bookkeeping services, as well as assisting the Directors and Senior Managers with their portfolio of work.
Chloe is an avid reader and fitness enthusiast. Her spare time is spent swimming, weightlifting, caring for her dogs and eating out – not necessarily at the same time.
James Turk - Assistant Accountant
James joined the firm in 2019 having previous bookkeeping experience with two local businesses. James is AAT qualified and has started his journey to become a qualified Chartered Certified Accountant with the ACCA.
James provides accounting, VAT and bookkeeping services, as well as assisting the Directors and Senior Managers with their portfolio of work.
Outside of work, James enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing Chess and supporting Arsenal.
Luis Gouveia - Assistant Accountant
Luis started with MDJ in the summer of 2020 having left the University of Warwick with a First Class Degree in Economics. He has now started studying for his ACCA qualification.
Luis provides accounting, VAT and bookkeeping services, as well as assisting the Directors and Senior Managers with their portfolio of work.
Aside from work, Luis enjoys football, basketball and gaming. He also tries to regularly go to the gym before he starts his day at MDJ.
Shadi Wood - Assistant Accountant
Shadi started with MDJ in 1999 as a trainee accountant, subsequently studying and becoming an AAT qualified accountant.
Shadi provides VAT and bookkeeping services to clients and is frequently on site with clients. When in the office she assists with the accounting services we provide.
When Shadi is not looking after her three energetic children she enjoys scuba diving, keeping fit and spending time with her friends.
Thomas Jenkins - Trainee Accountant
Thomas started at the firm in 2017 and provides accounting, VAT and bookkeeping services to our clients.
In his spare time, Thomas enjoys cooking and the music of The Beatles. He also follows Liverpool FC and The Scarlets rugby union and is now enjoying introducing these hobbies to his son, Barney.
Simon Hover - Payroll Advisor
Simon joined MDJ in 2014 as our dedicated payroll advisor having previously completed work experience with the firm. Simon is qualified with the AAT.
Simon deals with all of our client’s payroll and pension needs and runs all of our client’s outsourced weekly or monthly payrolls. He completes all necessary payroll and pension submissions and is the main point of contact for any payroll queries our clients may have.
Simon is a rugby league fan and supports St Helens. He also enjoys gym training, watching movies and other sports.
Debra Hearing - Bookkeeper
Debra joined MDJ in 2019 having previously worked as the financial controller/bookkeeper for a Property Management company in Brighton.
Debra provides bookkeeping, VAT and payroll services to a large portfolio of clients.
Originally from London, Debra is a passionate animal lover and loves the outdoors. Her interests include gardening, cycling, astronomy & crafting, and she also enjoys watching ice-hockey.
Admin Assistant and Bookkeeper
Mary Field - Admin Assistant and Bookkeeper
Mary started with the firm in 2015 after completing her City and Guilds bookkeeping qualification.
Mary assists the directors with all of their administration needs as well as providing bookkeeping services to some clients.
In Mary’s free time, she enjoys baking, swimming and the ‘great outdoors’, including walking her dogs, cycling and gardening.
